sorry, guys.
it's been a bit crazy.

as someone said, the handbook is pretty good.
they used to have a more comprehensive one, but the person who updated that one stopped about seven yeas ago, so tat's really outdated.

hmm.. advice...

we'll start with what to bring.
actually, what NOT to bring.
don't bring shampoo (maybe a small bottle, or some travel ones for out-shabbosim), detergent, food (except white tuna packed in water), or good clothing.
most things can be bought in israel. really. and you need the space for what's really important, like:
clothing
a WARM winter coat
linen (NOT fancy)
camera
recorder
alarm clock
makeup
deodorant - very important!
shoes (i find that sometimes, the cheaper ones last longer in israel. so if you find a normal looking pair in payless, buy it! especially if the sole is a bit thicker...)
two pairs of sneakers
pictures (i put up my pics in camp on an oaktag. came the end of camp - i just packed them flat on the bottom of my suitcase, and was the first to have my wall up in sem!)
shower slippers
stockings and socks
blowdryer
iron
towels (get one huge beach towel - they're awesome!)
if you're bringing an american looseleaf, then lots of looseleaf paper
medication
speakers for ipod or a boombox for CDs (not e/o needs to bring this...)
list of phone numbers in israel and abroad
your fuzzy bunny that you can't sleep without
shabbos clothing - nothing too fancy. a couple of sweaters and skirts will do. you may want to bring along a nice suit to wear at weddings, but not necessary. and comfortable shoes for shabbos ARE a necessity.

mke sure all electronics are 220 - not 110 like here.

the handbook says most else, i think, but you can post questions and i'll answer.

now for dorm life - every dorm is different, but these are the basics.
the first rule is BE MENTCHLICH.
that means try your hardest to not do anything that would annoy your roomies, such as:
getting up really early with a loud alarm clock
staying up late and talking loudly in the room
being an absolute mess and never cleaning
doing laundry very rarely
eating lots of food in the room or on s/o else's bed
leaving your clothing strewn about
not taking showers
bringing too much clothing and stuff, thereby cluttering the room
not giving roomie some quiet time when you see she needs it
and e/t else that comes along with it.

now, if you have a roomie who does such things as listed above, there are ways to ask her NICELY to change. and keep in mind that everyone grew up in different households, and what could be irritating to you may be ingrained into her psyche.
your attitude is what counts, so force yourself to have a good one. andif you're feeling really upset, then smile. it releases endorphins in your body that put you in a better mood.

this is your year to work on yourself, on your relationships with other people, and on your yiddishkeit. make the most of it. don't let something petty drag you down.
and if you feel like hitting someone in the head, call me and scream at me instead. i won't mind.
:)

you guys have any specific questions? it may take me a few days to answer, but i will...

thanx a million for taking the time to answer, sorry we were so impatient....this is the main focus for most of us rite now. well, i first gotta process the info before i ask any questions- but for starters: what do we do abt electronics, voltage wise, i dont wanna get all new stuff...and what abt charging ipods cameras etc. and what abt blowdryers and irons??????? get back to us when u get a chance, again- thanx!!!!!!! u da best!

Thanks for the packing list but do you mind suggesting how much of everything to pack

some electronics come with a switch to switch voltage - check yours. then all you have to get is an adaptor.

if not, you can get a converter, but it may ruin some things - ask the electronics store guy, or call or email the company that makes your electronic item to ask what you can do.

best thing is to get someone who's there now to leave electronics for you.

and btw, you don't need a huge iron. travel irons are great - and they even make some pocket, fold up ones that are really good.

you CAN buy most electronics there, if you're planning on buying. they even have a great blowdryer - better than elchim...

amounts - well, for clothing, you need at least two, two and a half weeks worth of clothing (for those time when you don't do laundry every week. lol)

bring lots of tights and stockings - they get runs; and socks, cuz they get lost.
two bath towels, two hand towels (and if you're bringing that big beach towel...)

two sets of linen.
pillow or two.
try to get a blanket there (your sem may be part of this program...)
you may want a summer blanket, too.

shoes - you need at least two good pairs of weekday shoes - depending on how hard you wear you shoes.
and you don't have to bring every color of the rainbow - black goes with almost eveything. (you can have a pair of tan, too, but really, save the weight - shoes are heavy!)

one pair shabbos shoes - many girls just wear a nicer pair of weekday, cuz you walk everywhere.

slippers

bath robe

shabbos robe?

pajamas - again, enough for 2 weeks.

sweatshirts - depending on how well you like them... you need a couple...

oh, i'm gonna say one thing that you think is really strange, but i know a few girls who brought this and they said it was awesome - long sleeved thermal or silk undershirt and leggings.
yerushalayim can get really chilly, and the more layers you put on, the better. (layers work better than one warm coat..)

anything else?

remember, i've been out of sem for a while, so this list is not totally comprehensive, bt i'll be glad to answer any more questions...
